Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) She was raised by her mother, her grandmother and godparents. Her father abandoned her family. While she was a small girl, she was diagnosed with an obsessive compulsive disorder, and also suffered from anxiety because of the word association. Ford became interested in acting during her teenage years and joined the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she didn't fit in. Ford then applied to be a student in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character in Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut when she appeared on Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1990. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Her regular work in theatre brought her into The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate was recognized as a stand-up comedian that became part of her portfolio in 1996.
